Mouthguard Policies

USA Hockey Mouthguard Policy (Rule 304 – Protective Equipment)

Under USA Hockey Rule 304, mouthguards are mandatory for players in 12U and older classifications. Specifically, all players—including goalkeepers—from 12 & Under (Youth and Girls’) through Youth 18 & Under (including High School), as well as Girls’ 19 & Under, must wear a colored (non-clear) internal mouthguard. The mouthguard must cover all remaining teeth of one jaw (typically the upper jaw).

While not required, it is strongly recommended at all levels that players use a mouthguard that has been professionally fitted by a dentist for optimal comfort and protection.

Enforcement

  • First violation: Team receives a warning.
  • Any additional violation in the same game: A misconduct penalty is assessed to the offending player or goalkeeper for an equipment violation.
